“Dune: Prophecy,” the six-part television show set 10,000 years before the events in Denis Villanueve’s “Dune” and “Dune Part Two,” has been renewed for a second season on HBO.
The show tells the story of the Harkonnen sisters Valya (Emily Watson; Jessica Barden) and Tula (Olivia Williams, Emma Canning), as they lead the sisterhood sect that will later be called the Bene Gesserit.
Its final episode aired and streamed on Monday (Philippine time). Reportedly, the first episode of the show amassed 15 million viewers worldwide.
Based on the expansive universe created by Frank Herbert—and later Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson—Dune is also the inspiration for the other science fiction universes such as Star Wars.
“‘Dune: Prophecy’ has captivated audiences around the globe thanks to the visionary leadership of showrunner and executive producer Alison Schapker, who will continue to guide this grand tale of truth and power,” Sarah Aubrey, head of Max original programming, said in a press release. “We are incredibly grateful to our partners at Legendary and to our extraordinary cast and crew for their service to the Imperium. We’re excited to collaborate with this team again to see what they have in store.”
The HBO Original drama is also co-produced with Legendary Television.
Jason Clodfelter, president of television at Legendary, said that the next season will allow them and HBO to expand on the Dune franchise.
“We look forward to continuing our incredible partnership with HBO and are thrilled for Alison Schapker, her team, and the cast and crew who have worked so passionately to bring this world-class source material from Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson to life,” he said.
“Dune: Prophecy” is inspired by the “Sisterhood of Dune” novel by Herbert and Anderson.
