HBO Max once again led streamers in terms of the number of nominations in the Golden Globes, but this year, they are tied with Netflix.
Nominations for the awards given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in the United States were announced Monday, Dec. 12.
HBO Max’s “House of the Dragon”; Netflix’s “The Crown” and “Ozark”; AMC+’s “Better Call Saul”; and Apply TV+’s “Severance” have all been nominated as best television series in the drama category. This is “House of the Dragon’s” first season and thus first nomination, while “The Crown” won two years ago, the same year “Ozark” was also nominated.
Emma D’Arcy, who played the older Rhaenyra Targaryen in “House of the Dragon,” is nominated for her lead performance even though she has only appeared in five episodes of the show. Meanwhile, Milly Alcock, who played the younger Rhaenyra, was snubbed. D’Arcy’s fellow nominees are Zendaya from the HBO show “Euphoria,” Laura Linney from “Ozark,” Imelda Stauton from “The Crown,” and Hilary Swank from “Alaska Daily.”
The comedy series “Hacks” is again nominated for best television series in the comedy or musical category. The show was last year’s winner thanks to the wonderful and funny team up by Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder. It has to defend its title from other nominees “Abbott Elementary,” “The Bear,” “Only Murders in the Building,” and “Wednesday.”
Of course Smart is nominated again for her lead performance in the show. Kaley Cuoco from HBO’s “The Flight Attendant” is also nominated. This is Cuoco’s second nomination for her role. The other nominees are Jenna Ortega from “Wednesday,” Selena Gomez from “Only Murders in the Building,” and Quinta Brunson from “Abbott Elementary.”
Einbinder, in the other hand, is nominated in for her supporting role this time. She was nominated for her lead role in the 79th Golden Globe Awards.
Bill Hader, meanwhile, has been nominated for his lead role in the comedy “Barry,” which unfortunately was snubbed for this set of nominations. Henry Winkler is nominated for his support role in the show.
Critics love the second season of “The White Lotus” more than the first one, so there’s also a high chance the show will once again win in the limited series category. Jennifer Coolidge is once again nominated for her performance as supporting actress, a category she won last season. Aubrey Plaza is also nominated for her performance in “The White Lotus.” F. Murray Abraham was also nominated in a supporting role in the show.
Colin Firth, who stars as the novelist Michael Peterson in the true crime docuseries “The Staircase,” is also nominated for his lead role in the miniseries category.
