The hit show is based on the game with the same title and is show-run by the game’s creative director and writer Neil Druckman, and “Chernobyl” co-creator Craig Mazin.

The premiere episode of “The Last of Us,” titled “When You’re Lost in the Darkness,” is also officially HBO’s second most viewed first episode show after “House of the Dragon.”

The episode has viewed by 22 million in the United States alone as of this writing. HBO has not released the number of viewers worldwide yet.

Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programming and the head of HBO Drama Series and Films, said through an HBO press release that she cannot wait to see more of the show that features a pandemic caused by fungi.

“[Mazin] and [Druckman], alongside executive producer Carolyn Strauss, and the rest of our phenomenal cast and crew, have defined a genre with their masterful debut season of ‘The Last of Us,’” said Orsi, who also called the as yet to be finished first season “unforgettable.”

Druckman meanwhile thanked all those who tuned in on their first two episodes and said that the collaboration with Mazin, all the cast and crew, and the television network HBO has exceeded his expectations.

“Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with season two! On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog and PlayStation, thank you!,” he said.

Naughty Dog is the company that developed “The Last of Us” games on PlayStation.

Mazin, on the other hand, also thanked Druckman, HBO, and the show’s fans.

“The audience has given us the chance to continue, and as a fan of the characters and world [Druckman] and Naughty Dog created, I couldn’t be more ready to dive back in,” he said.

“The Last of Us” stars Pedro Pascal and Joel Miller, who meets Bella Ramsey’s character Ellie 20 years after an outbreak. She is believed to be the cure for the infections after a bite failed to turn her.
